By immunohistochemistry, Ab-1 specifically recognizes a protein in melanocytes and melanomas. Intradermal nevi, normal adult melanocytes, and nonmelanocytic cells are negative. It does not stain tumor cells of epithelial, lymphoid, glial, or mesenchymal origin.
